Assignment, Friday, August 31

(...and aren't you glad you are in the air-conditioned computer lab instead of 18-207!)

***You will turn in your filled out chart at the end of the period. Make sure your name is in the upper left hand corner.

Whether you plan to apply to a four-year college this fall, or apply as a transfer student, the application process is very similar.  The value of this assignment is that it familiarizes you with the process and widens your perspective on what colleges are out there for you.

1. Copy and paste on a WORD document the chart which helps you organize this process. (Use the landscape format for page set-up.)

2. Choose one or two colleges to research.

Start researching colleges:

If you already have a college in mind:

Go to their webpage: check their majors under undergraduate majors  or  curriculum to see if your intended major is listed. (SAMPLE ADMISSIONS PAGE)

Click admissions for their admissions criteria.

Begin to fill out your chart (Everything from the admissions office address and phone number to what their essay question is, if required, and which tests are required.)

Go to www.collegeboard.com and check out the particulars of what the colleges you’ve selected values to get a sense of if this is a reasonable choice for you. (See sample search)

On the back of the chart, answer the following:

1)    a) what is the average GPA of its applicants?

        b) how important is the GPA

2) what is the average math SAT score?

3) verbal SAT score?

4) What percentage of the applicant pool is in the top 20% of their class?

5) how important are extracurriculars?

If you are still looking for colleges:

Begin on the college search page and create a profile for the type of college you are looking for. (This will ask you to choose the setting, locations, etc. you are looking for.)

Choose any one college that the search suggests.

Choose a reasonable major.
