SENIORS: SCHEDULE FOR COLLEGE APPLICATIONS |
GOALS 0F THE THURSDAY JOB MARKET ASSIGNMENT RESEARCH TIMELINE CAREERS OF THE FUTURE Ask your grandparents how they wound up in their particular career and you are likely to hear that they followed in their parents' footseteps. If their fathers were carpenters, they became carpenters, or contractors. If their mothers were schoolteachers, they became schoolteachers. Ask your parents the same question and you'll probably hear about a much more serendipitous route. How can we account for this? 1)The type of jobs that your parents are involved in today may not have existed in your grandparents' day. 2) Your parents' society was a lot more mobile and in a lot more transition than your grandparents' society. Consider your own future. Prognositicators in the area of FUTURE STUDIES (yes, this is actually a major in some universities today!) make the following claims for your future: 1) The average individual will change careers at least 7 times. 2) Many of the careers available in your adult life have not been created yet!
GOALS OF THE THURSDAY JOB MARKET ASSIGNMENT 1. TO INCREASE YOUR AWARENESS OF THE MANY NEW CAREERS AND JOBS OPENING UP TODAY 2. TO GIVE YOU PRACTICE IN THE "SPEECH TO INFORM" FORMAT 3. TO GIVE NEW STUDENTS AN OPPORTUNITY TO LEARN POWERPOINT BEFORE THEIR SENIOR PRESENTATION

Review the government sponsored webpage on Jobs of the Future or another article about jobs in the future. Present information about the future of this career.(Note: this might be a good place to start for those of you that have no idea what career to investigate!) If you have no idea what career or job to research try any of these links: ................Start with a college major and see what careers are available with this major , using this UCSB counseling website ................Start with a website that lists cool, unique, unusual, and seasonal jobs -----------Start with another UCSB link that gives examples of jobs for humanities (non-science or math) majors A sublink under this page, entitled Travelogs, also has interviews with specific people who are involved in these careers,. 2. Interview someone (a real living and breathing human) in the profession. Cover at least the following questions: a. What does the interviewee find challenging in his profession? b. What path did the interviewee take to his present profession? c. What education and experience level is required for his present job? d. What are the fringe benefits and the downsides to his profession?
3. Read about the career in Studs Terkel's book WORKING.Answer the following questions:
4. Read an online interview which covers the same questions as above. These interviews or stories are available off of some of the above links. 5. Copy down jobs listed in the want ads of a major newspaper that fall into the general field you are interested in. (San Francisco Chronicle link) Create an EDUCATION LADDER that lists the education and experience required for each of the jobs in the field you've explored. Note: If you are using Microsoft WORD, use the DRAW tools to create lines. Use the TEXT BOX icon to create boxes. Copy the material from the ads. paste them in the text box. you then can move around the text boxes to the right level of your ladder. If you are working directly with POWERPOINT, the approach is the same. (See sample for Environmental Services career.) (Click on the above link for a sample education ladder that you can copy, paste and work with.)
