CAREERS OF THE FUTURE

Ask your grandparents how they wound up in their particular career and you are likely to hear that they followed in their parents' footseteps. If their fathers were carpenters, they became carpenters, or contractors. If their mothers were schoolteachers, they became schoolteachers. Ask your parents the same question and you'll probably hear about a much more serendipitous route. How can we account for this?

1)The type of jobs that your parents are involved in today may not have existed in your grandparents' day.

2) Your parents' society was a lot more mobile and in a lot more transition than your grandparents' society.

Consider your own future. Prognositicators in the area of FUTURE STUDIES (yes, this is actually a major in some universities today!) make the following claims for your future:

1) The average individual will change careers at least 7 times.

2) Many of the careers available in your adult life have not been created yet!

GOALS OF THE THURSDAY JOB MARKET ASSIGNMENT

1. TO INCREASE YOUR AWARENESS OF THE MANY NEW CAREERS AND JOBS OPENING UP TODAY

2. TO GIVE YOU PRACTICE IN THE "SPEECH TO INFORM" FORMAT

3. TO GIVE NEW STUDENTS AN OPPORTUNITY TO LEARN POWERPOINT BEFORE THEIR SENIOR PRESENTATION

ASSIGNMENT:

1. Choose a "career of the future" to research. (Use any one of the options listed under Research and Gathering Information below.

Remember that a major goal is to introduce others to these opening careers, so the career need not be one for which your skills are a perfect match.

2.  Using at least three of the five sources under Research and Gathering Information below, answer the following questions:

a. What recent developments in science or trends in society have created the need for this career?

b.  How does one prepare oneself for this career:

        - education level demanded for entry level

        - what is needed to advance in pay

        - what are the advanced levels of the career? Create an EDUCATION LADDER that lists    the education and experience required for each of the STEPS in the field you've explored. CLICK TO SEE SAMPLE.

c. .  What is  a typical day in the life of someone in this career; what does the worker do?

d.  What are the fringe benefits of the job/career?

e.  What are the downsides to the job/career?

f.  what kind of personality traits lend themselves to success in this career?

II. Present your findings to the class on interesting slides in POWERPOINT (include graphics and at least two buttons)
