EVALUATING A WEBSITE

As you know by now, anyone can creae a webpage and publish it on the internet, irregardless of any knowledge or authority. Students as a whole todya have grown up with the internet and are depending more and more on the internet and less and less on the library for research. That puts them in danger of blindly trustingall the information they gather from the internet - a very bad idea.

Today you will be using a UCLA Library Webpage that UCLA uses to inform its students about how to test websites for their accuracy. The timing of this lesson coincides with your research for the debate topics in U.S. History class for which you will be using the research capabilities of the internet.

There are three general areas we will analyze for each webpage:?

I. ACCURACY AND AUTHORITY - Who wrote and published the page. What is its goal or purpose? Does this person have any authority?

II. OBJECTIVITY AND ADVOCACY- How detailed and objective is the information? Does it meet its goals?

III. CURRENCY AND CONVERAGE - How up-to-date is the page and its links? How much of the page is text and information and how much graphics and "flash?" Is the information cited correclty?

DIRECTIONS:

1. Each student in a group of three will be assigned one of the three criteria above.

2. Start with the link below and click on to the topic you are assigned. You will see a list of webpages. Choose one - do not follow the directions on their site. Fill out your part of the handout EVALUATION OF WEB DOCUMENTS. HOW TO INTERPRET THE BASICS.

3. Share your information with the other two group members. All students should have the entire page filled in.
