IS THE NOVEL HUCK FINN RACIST?
Definition of racism: “A belief that race is the main determinant of an individual’s capability and human traits, and that one race is inherently superior to another.”
One of the main subplots in Huckleberry Finn is the developing relationship between Jim, a runaway slave, and Huck, an adolescent growing up in a slaveholding state in which abolitionists are considered dangerous and even traitorous to the South.
As you read Huck Finn, look for evidence that the author’s portrayal of Jim is racist or encourages racism in the reader.
