Reflections on "Musee des Beaux Arts"

Fall of Icarus by Brueghel

Writing Your Reflections on "Musee des Beaux Arts", a poem by W.H. Auden

One of the purposes of this web exercise is to introduce you to different types of written responses to literature, Make sure to click on each term (freewrite, paraphrase, summary, character sketch) to learn its requirements before beginning to write each type of response. WRITE THE DEFINITION OF EACH IN YOUR NOTEBOOK.

I've estimated what you should be able to accomplish each day. However, you will be completing these assignments at your own pace, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday. The total packet is due on Monday.

TUESDAY IN LAB

    A) Read the definition of a Freewrite: After you have read the poem, "Musee des Beaux Arts" two or more times to form your general impressions, including reading it aloud or listening to a reading so that you can hear the sounds and rhythms, freewrite your initial response to the poem. Without closing your Web browser, open a   new Word document. Don't be concerned yet about the story of Icarus or about format or mechanics--just freewrite your thoughts about the poem and label it “First Thoughts about Musee..” Do not close the document since you will be adding to it. You can toggle back and forth between your Web browser and your word processor.

   B)  Read the definition of a Paraphrase: Now write a paraphrase of the poem: Begin this paragraph with a topic sentence stating the author and title of the poem, as well as its main concept: "In W.H Auden's poem, "Musee des Beaux Arts" he describes....................... Write in your own words exactly what you the poem says. Do not include your opinions about the poem here or what you think the poem "means." Instead, restate the situation of the poem as best you can.

Give this writing a heading, “Paraphrase.”

THURSDAY IN LAB

The Greek Myth As Background for the Poem

A)  Read the definition of a Summary: Now that you have read and thought about Auden's poem, you can gain a better understanding of both the poem and Breughel's painting by reading the Greek legend of Daedalus and Icarus. First read the legend of Icarus  then write a brief summary of the legend . Label the summary, "Legend of Icarus and Daedalus."

B)Writing Your Impressions of the Legend of Icarus

Although the characters in this myth, Icarus or Daedalus,  are not extensively drawn, each represents some aspect of humans.  Write a character sketch of either Icarus or Daedalus . Label it "Character Sketch."

          C)  Having reflected on the poem, viewed the painting, and read the legend, you are familiar with two works of art that include allusions to the legend of Icarus. Read the definition of the  concept of allusion in Auden's poem..  You will notice that in the Musee de Beaux Arts poem, each colored word is a kind of allusion you can click on to get meaning from.

Copy and paste the definition of allusion onto your word document,
